Maglera Doe Boy’s Mzansi film passes 100,000 YouTube views in a day
Maglera Doe Boy's nearly 18-minute film Mzansi: The Movie Part 1 collected 100,000 YouTube views on its first day, and the numbers kept climbing afterwards.
Rapper Maglera Doe Boy has had a strong start with his newest visual project. His film Mzansi: The Movie Part 1 reached 100,000 YouTube views within 24 hours of going online, SA Hip Hop Mag reported. The film runs for close to 18 minutes, which is long for content that usually lives on social media.
Maglera shared the milestone on Instagram and thanked viewers for watching and passing the film along. Given the length of the project, he said the response was “crazy”. According to the report, views later went past 130,000 in follow-up checks.
What the film is about
Maglera made the film with filmmaker Brian O’Haze. Its main character is Doe, who comes from Klerksdorp and builds a profitable underground business moving goods in and out of countries across Southern Africa. As the business expands, so do the problems, and an unplanned romance puts his success in danger.
The cast draws from the local hip-hop scene. Besides Maglera himself, viewers will spot 25K, Sir Trill, Ason, Young Stunna and Material Don Dada, along with other performers. Filming took place in South Africa and Mozambique, and the production mixes street culture, fashion, music and crime drama.
The Izinja 2.0 single
The film is tied to a song called Izinja 2.0, a collaboration between Maglera, 25K and Sir Trill. Bigles for Real handled production, and Zoocci Coke Dope curated the track. It leans on classic kwaito influences while giving each of the three rappers room for his own style. The single reached streaming platforms shortly before the film premiered on YouTube.
SA Hip Hop Mag noted that the reception suggests audiences will make time for longer creative work if the storytelling is good, even in an online space dominated by short clips.
How to watch
The film is free to view on Maglera Doe Boy’s official YouTube channel. He has pointed fans to the link in his social media bio. The title carries “Part 1”, but the source does not say when or whether another instalment will follow.
