Buzzi Lee releases seven-track project Bontle on 6 November

Pretoria rapper Buzzi Lee has released Bontle, a seven-track project named after herself that leans into her identity and her SePitori style.

Pretoria rapper Buzzi Lee has released her new project, Bontle, which landed on streaming services today, 6 November. According to SA Hip Hop Mag, the seven-track body of work is a more personal statement from the artist.

The title is taken from her birth name, Bontle Makhwelo. The project centres on her identity, her confidence as a lyricist and the sound she has been building in South African hip-hop.

From EP announcement to album listing

Buzzi Lee first announced Bontle as an EP in early October. By the time it was released, it was listed under the album category on the major streaming platforms.

The lead single was "Abracadabra", produced by MashBeatz. It includes verses from Mochen RSA and from Reason, whose full name is Sizwe Alakine. Talking about the track while promoting it, Buzzi Lee said, "Abracadabra is about realizing that you are the magic." The song also carries a line in Setswana-flavoured street language telling listeners not to underestimate her or compare her with anyone else.

Guests and sound

Besides Mochen RSA and Reason, the guest list on Bontle also includes Loatinover Pounds and Thato Saul, along with other contributors. SA Hip Hop Mag says the seven tracks showcase her SePitori lyricism, her versatile flows, and the township expression and cultural identity that run through her music.

The release follows a busy stretch for the rapper. She was recently announced as Apple Music’s Up Next artist for South Africa. She also appeared on the "Sho Boy" collaboration and on the award-winning "Skuta Baba Remix", and put out her own song "Bao Jela" with K.Keed.

What this means for listeners

If you want to hear the project, it is available now on the major streaming services. Because it is filed as an album rather than an EP, you may need to look under albums when searching for it. Fans of Pretoria hip-hop can start with "Abracadabra" to get a feel for her style before moving on to the full tracklist.
