Saws warns of storms in KZN and Eastern Cape on Tuesday

The weather service has issued yellow warnings for storms and flooding in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape on Tuesday, while parts of the north face extreme heat.

Commuters and residents in several provinces should prepare for difficult conditions on Tuesday, 27 October 2026. The South African Weather Service (Saws) has put out warnings for storms, flooding, fire danger and extreme heat, The Citizen reported.

Storms and flooding in the east

Two yellow warnings cover KwaZulu-Natal. In the eastern part of the province, severe thunderstorms are expected, bringing heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and lightning. Saws says this could flood roads, low-lying areas and communities, and lead to some bridges and roads being closed. The warning also cites a risk of injuries and danger to life, as well as damage to homes, vehicles, livestock and people’s livelihoods.

Western KwaZulu-Natal has its own yellow warning for severe thunderstorms with similar hazards, although the expected impact there is more limited: flooding in certain spots and some damage to infrastructure and communities.

In the Eastern Cape, a yellow level 2 warning is in place for disruptive rain. It applies to the coast and the nearby inland areas from Cape St Francis eastwards, where roads, bridges and settlements could be flooded in places.

Fire danger and heat

Saws expects extremely high fire danger across most of North West, much of the northern Free State and the Limpopo Valley. Extreme heat is forecast for the south-central parts and Lowveld of Limpopo, and for some areas of the Mpumalanga Lowveld.

Province-by-province outlook

  • Gauteng: partly cloudy and warm, hotter in the north, with a few showers and thundershowers. The UVB sunburn index is high.
  • Mpumalanga: partly cloudy and warm with a few showers, but cloudy in the east.
  • Limpopo: mostly fine in the far north in the morning, otherwise hot to very hot, with a few afternoon showers.
  • North West: morning showers in the north-east, then fine, windy and hot.
  • Free State: morning showers in the east, then fine, windy and warm.
  • Northern Cape: fine and cool to warm, with more cloud in the north-east.
  • Western Cape: fine and warm in the west, with a few morning showers on the eastern part of the south coast. The UVB sunburn index is extreme.
  • Eastern Cape: cloudy and cool to cold with showers and thundershowers, which will be widespread in the south-east and south of the escarpment.
  • KwaZulu-Natal: morning fog inland, then cloudy and cool to warm, and cold in the south-west, with widespread showers and thundershowers.

What this means for you

If you travel in KwaZulu-Natal or the eastern Eastern Cape on Tuesday, allow extra time and be prepared for closed roads or bridges. Take care around low-lying areas that can flood. In the hot, dry provinces, avoid anything that could start a veld fire. Saws advises people in Gauteng and the Western Cape to protect themselves from prolonged sun exposure.
