Proteas make one change for Cape Town Test decider against Australia
Temba Bavuma says the series-deciding Test against Australia at Newlands is far more than a routine match, with Gerald Coetzee coming in for the injured Anrich Nortje.
South Africa and Australia meet in the third and final Test of their series at Newlands in Cape Town today, with everything still to play for. Proteas captain Temba Bavuma has made it clear that he does not see this as routine, according to The Citizen.
Australia won the opening Test in Durban by 214 runs. The Proteas hit back last week in Gqeberha, winning the second Test by an innings and 31 runs. That leaves the series level and the decider in Cape Town.
Why the match matters
Captains often describe the next fixture as “just another game”, but Bavuma rejected that idea. Australia are the top-ranked side in the world, and South Africa are the reigning world champions in the format.
Both teams are also trying to reach the World Test Championship (WTC) final in the current 2025-2027 cycle. Bavuma said a series win would bring his side closer to a possible place in that final, although he noted that a lot of cricket remains, including matches against Bangladesh, England and Sri Lanka.
“This is definitely not another game of cricket,” Bavuma said. He added that some players in the squad have never beaten Australia in a Test and that it would be good for them to experience it. He expects a tough contest, as the Gqeberha match proved to be.
Coetzee in for Nortje
The Proteas are making one change to their XI. Fast bowler Anrich Nortje picked up a groin injury in the second Test, and Gerald Coetzee comes in to replace him.
Seamers Corbin Bosch and Dane Paterson were also available, but team management chose Coetzee. He has not played a Test since November 2024. Bavuma acknowledged that the long gap was considered, but described Coetzee as the closest like-for-like replacement for Nortje in the attack’s role as an enforcer.
“Gerald does have an extra bit of pace,” the captain said, adding that Coetzee has been with the team and will believe he can make a big play.
What it means for fans
The result in Cape Town will settle the series, since neither side has an advantage going in. It will also affect the standing of both teams in the WTC race, where more matches are still to come against Bangladesh, England and Sri Lanka.
