Sharks sign Springbok flyhalf Manie Libbok on multi-year deal
The Sharks have secured Springbok playmaker Manie Libbok on a multi-year contract, with the 29-year-old due to arrive in Durban in July 2027.
The Sharks have landed Springbok flyhalf Manie Libbok, according to IOL. The 29-year-old has agreed a multi-year contract with the Durban franchise and will link up with the squad in July 2027.
Libbok is currently playing in Japan for the Hanazono Kintetsu Liners. He will see out his commitments there before moving to Kings Park.
A second spell in Durban
This will not be Libbok’s first time in black and white. He was on the Sharks’ books in the 2020-21 season, but IOL reports that the Covid-19 period, when rugby was heavily restricted, meant he never established himself there.
He then moved to the Stormers and stayed until 2025. In Cape Town he developed into one of the game’s most influential playmakers. He was part of the side that won the first United Rugby Championship title in 2021-22, and he topped the competition’s points-scoring list in two seasons in a row. He is also a Rugby World Cup winner with the Springboks and has played 34 Tests.
What the Sharks say
Libbok said no other club appealed to him as much for the next stage of his career. After speaking to coach JP Pietersen about his vision for the team, he said he could sense a new energy and culture developing in Durban. His own summary was short: “I’m all in.”
Pietersen, who is leading what the club calls a new era, described the signing as ideal for the way the Sharks want to play. “Manie is a gamechanger and a playmaker,” he said. He added that Libbok’s hunger stood out in their conversation and that the flyhalf’s attitude should rub off on the younger players in the group.
Sharks CEO Shaun Bryans said the deal shows where the club is heading. He explained that the aim is to build a team that competes for trophies, by developing talent through the club’s own system and also bringing in top players from around the world.
IOL notes that Libbok would be directing a backline that includes promising youngsters such as Zek Siyaya and Jaco Williams, alongside experienced centre Andre Esterhuizen.
What it means for Sharks supporters
Fans will have to wait for the new flyhalf, as Libbok only joins the squad in July 2027 after finishing in Japan. The club has not announced any other details of the contract.
