SA stars mark Halloween with Raven, Grinch and Master KG costumes

South African celebrities marked Halloween with costumes ranging from Hollywood and Disney characters to local personalities and soapie favourites, according to IOL.

Several well-known South African entertainers traded their usual red-carpet style for costumes this Halloween, according to IOL. Their choices mixed international pop culture with distinctly local references.

Music video and sitcom throwbacks

Rapper and actress Anele Zondo posted two separate Halloween shoots. In the first, she teamed up with fellow rapper L-Tido to recreate the music video for “Bound 2” by Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West. For the second, she appeared on her own as Raven Baxter, the character Raven-Symoné played in the Disney Channel sitcom “That’s So Raven”.

Actress and digital creator Linda Mtoba chose a seasonal favourite instead and became the Grinch from the Dr Seuss stories. She went green for the part and paired it with a white fur coat and a big white hat.

Tributes to local personalities

DJ and producer Uncle Waffles wore two costumes. The first honoured dancer and Gqom personality Mzamo Mgikx Mgilane, whose popular interview she re-enacted. IOL notes that Mgilane comes from KwaMashu, north of Durban, and has built a following with his energetic dancing and big personality.

Her second look was a collaboration with presenter and rapper Nomuzi “Moozlie” Mabena. Together they re-staged an older interview featuring Constavacious Glamazzonne. IOL reported that Uncle Waffles even tracked down the same style of jeans that Glamazzonne wore in the original clip.

Hollywood, soapies and a hitmaker

Rapper and businesswoman Nadia Nakai went for Hollywood glamour, dressing as Pamela Anderson in her “Baywatch” days. Anderson played lifeguard C.J. Parker in the series, which made the look an easily recognisable choice.

DJ Dbn Gogo also leaned on nostalgia. She first recreated a well-known moment from Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married?”, playing the character Angela. She then switched to a local reference, appearing as Tau Mogale and re-staging a scene from the South African soapie “Generations”.

Television and radio personality Somizi Mhlongo paid tribute to hitmaker Master KG. He completed his outfit with the musician’s trademark bandana.

IOL summed up the batch of costumes as full of nostalgia, humour and creativity, with references reaching from international screens to South African television moments.
