Lasizwe Dambuza trades Awkward Dates for Celebrity Come Dine With Me
YouTuber Lasizwe Dambuza says Celebrity Come Dine With Me South Africa put him on the receiving end of judgement for once, and he is not sure about his cooking.
Lasizwe Dambuza is known for steering awkward conversations on his Awkward Dates series. On Celebrity Come Dine With Me South Africa, he is the one being assessed, according to IOL.
The YouTuber hosts a dinner party at his home for fellow contestants, who then judge the evening. He is upfront about his skills in the kitchen. “I don’t really know how to cook!” he said, adding that he follows recipes well and is even better at asking for help. He jokingly describes himself as “a kitchen supervisor with excellent delegation skills”.
Giving up control
Lasizwe usually shapes every part of his own productions, so taking part in someone else’s format was a change. He said the hardest part was not controlling how others saw him, and that the experience pushed him to stay in the moment rather than think like a content creator.
He wants viewers to see him in settings other than Awkward Dates. He also wanted the dinner party to reflect South African culture through the food and how it was presented.
One moment from filming stands out. While braaiing, he and his brother almost ruined the meat because they were busy arguing. “The meat was fighting for its life,” Lasizwe recalled.
Criticism and career plans
Lasizwe has spent close to ten years in the spotlight and says he is used to criticism, though he admits it still affects him. He said he is happy to hear that someone did not enjoy his food, but asked people not to turn that into a judgement of who he is.
He also said he has become far more selective about the work he accepts. He does not want the next ten years to repeat the last ten, and he is exploring television, entertainment and business alongside Awkward Dates.
He was recently named YouTube Creator of the Year after a decade of making content. He said he sat in his car afterwards and thought of his late parents, wanting to tell them, “Guys, we finally did it!”
What viewers should know
IOL’s report did not say when the episodes will air or who the other contestants are, so check local listings for the schedule. As for how the meal went, Lasizwe is keeping it to himself. “I came to serve,” he said, leaving viewers to tune in and judge for themselves.
