Honeydew police sergeant in court on rape and grooming charges
A 49-year-old Honeydew police sergeant arrested by Ipid has appeared in court on rape and sexual grooming charges, with a bail hearing due on 28 October.
A police sergeant stationed at Honeydew has made his first appearance in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape and sexual grooming, The Citizen reported. The 49-year-old was arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) on 23 October 2026.
The charges relate to a young woman, now 20, who is a relative of the officer. The allegations have not been tested in court, and he is presumed innocent until a court finds otherwise.
What Ipid alleges
Ipid spokesperson Lizzy Suping said the alleged abuse took place between 2022 and October 2024. The complainant was 14 when it began. According to the directorate, she was living in the care of the officer’s household at the time.
Ipid also alleges that the sergeant threatened and intimidated the young woman so that she would stay silent. It further claims he used money to buy her silence. These remain allegations at this stage.
After his arrest, the officer was held in the Moroka holding cells. He appeared in court on Monday, 26 October 2026. The magistrate postponed the matter to 28 October 2026 so that a bail application can be heard.
Rape cases involving police officers
Ms Suping also gave figures on rape cases against members of the police. Ipid registered 116 such cases in the 2025/2026 financial year, up from 95 in 2024/2025.
Gauteng accounted for 21 of those cases. That placed it second among the provinces, behind only the Eastern Cape.
What happens next
The case returns to the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, when the bail application is due to be heard. The court will then decide whether the sergeant remains in custody while the case continues.
Ipid investigates complaints against members of the South African Police Service, and the figures it released show the number of rape cases involving officers rising year on year. Further details of the case are likely to emerge as it moves through the courts.
