Chiefs’ Da Cruz gains breathing space as PSL postpones fixtures

The PSL's election-day postponement delays Kaizer Chiefs' clash with AmaZulu, giving coach Fernando da Cruz a short respite.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz has been handed a short respite after the PSL called off its Betway Premiership matches on Wednesday because of the local elections, according to IOL.

The decision may leave the league with a pile-up of outstanding games to catch up on. For Da Cruz, though, it means a testing assignment has been pushed back.

A tough opponent put on hold

Chiefs were due to host AmaZulu on Wednesday, a fixture that carried extra interest because AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane is a former Chiefs man. IOL noted that Zwane left Amakhosi after a demotion, and that he would be keen to show how far he has come whenever he faces his old club.

AmaZulu would also have arrived as the favourites. They have strung together six consecutive victories in the league and the Carling Knockout Cup, so Chiefs would have been up against a side full of confidence.

Zwane will have to wait for that reunion. AmaZulu now turn to the Carling Knockout Cup, where they face Stellenbosch FC in the quarter-finals on Sunday night. A win would move them a step closer to a trophy.

Chiefs turn to the cup

Chiefs’ attention shifts to their own Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final against Siwelele in Polokwane. IOL described it as a chance to make amends for last Saturday’s Soweto derby defeat to Orlando Pirates.

Da Cruz has the public backing of sporting director Kaizer Motaung Junior. Even so, IOL says the coach remains under pressure with each game, particularly while Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu keep collecting wins.

For now, IOL writes, Da Cruz can take some relief from avoiding an in-form AmaZulu side, led by a coach who always has extra motivation against the club he left.

What it means for supporters

Fans who planned to follow Wednesday’s matches will need to wait. The source does not say when the postponed fixtures, including Chiefs against AmaZulu, will be played, so supporters should watch for official PSL announcements on new dates before making plans to attend or watch.
