Government urges voters to head to the polls early today

Government has called on eligible voters to cast their ballots early today, as stations stay open until 9pm and showers are expected in some areas.

South Africans are voting today in the 2026 municipal elections, and government is asking every eligible voter to take part. According to SAnews, the Electoral Commission is running the polls at voting stations around the country.

Voting hours and the weather

Voting stations opened at 7am and will close at 9pm. SAnews reported that anyone who is already inside the boundaries of a voting station at 9pm will still be helped to vote.

Weather forecasts point to showers in some areas. Because of this, government is encouraging people to vote early in the day so that rain does not disrupt their plans.

What government is saying

Deputy Government spokesperson William Baloyi issued a statement urging people to go to the stations where they are registered to vote. He said the elections reflect the country’s values of “freedom, inclusivity and public participation”.

Baloyi described voting as a constitutional right and a chance to pick the candidates and parties that people believe can represent their communities and help them develop. He also said that, since the arrival of democracy in 1994, people’s lives have changed fundamentally for the better.

He added that the duty to protect and strengthen democracy rests with all citizens. In his words, voters who take part have a direct say in who leads their municipality and in the direction it takes.

“Make your mark, every vote matters,” Baloyi said, calling on people to use their right to choose freely and without hesitation.

What this means for voters

For anyone who has not yet voted, the key points from today’s announcements are simple:

  • Voting stations are open from 7am until 9pm.
  • Voters should go to their own designated voting station.
  • People already within the boundaries of a station at 9pm will still be assisted.
  • Showers are expected in some areas, so going early may help you avoid delays.

Municipalities are the level of government closest to households, and the people elected today will help shape the leadership of local councils. Government says it hopes every eligible South African will play a part in strengthening local democracy by voting before the day is out.
