Soweto derby debutants to watch at FNB Stadium on Saturday
Several new signings and young players at Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs could make their first Soweto derby appearances at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Orlando Pirates host Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium in Nasrec on Saturday in the Soweto derby, one of the biggest fixtures on the local sporting calendar. Form is often said to count for little in this match, but according to IOL, much of the attention will fall on the newcomers hoping to make an impression.
Orlando Pirates’ new faces
Attacker Simphiwe Masilela, 22, looks set for his first derby. He has contributed a single goal and a single assist across 11 appearances, but his pace and trickery make him a constant danger on the ball. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has gently criticised his flair, urging him to showboat less and concentrate on finding useful attacking space.
Midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi joined while Pirates were dealing with a midfield injury crisis that sidelined Makhehleni Makhaulala and Thalente Mbatha. He responded with mature displays at both ends of the pitch and has become an important figure. His main job is to link play, though he has also scored important goals that decided matches.
Right-back Bulelani Sigomoshe arrived from Milford on deadline day and was given a big role when regular starter Kamogelo Sebelebele was injured. Sebelebele, a Bafana Bafana international, is not expected to be available for the derby, so Sigomoshe is likely to be needed in the back line. He can also move into midfield from right-back, which helps the team track back as a unit.
Kaizer Chiefs’ new faces
Centre-back Thabo Moloisane grew up in Soweto and has said he backed Chiefs from a young age, which made his pre-season move from Stellenbosch an easy decision. Chiefs have been let down by individual errors and have not kept clean sheets as regularly as they would like. Moloisane is confident those will come as the defensive unit settles. On his own form, he has been solid since the season began.
Attacker Faiz Abrahams is on a season-long loan from Stellenbosch and wants the move made permanent. He has adapted quickly and delivered when called upon. The derby is a chance to lift his game further, particularly as Chiefs lost one derby and drew the other last season.
Midfielder Thulani Mabaso is among the academy graduates trying to win over coach Fernando Da Cruz. His minutes have been limited, but he has shown flashes of creativity. A derby appearance could be an opportunity to show he deserves more regular senior football.
What to watch on Saturday
With injuries affecting Pirates’ options and Chiefs looking to improve their derby record, these newcomers may play a bigger part than usual. Supporters can look out for how Sigomoshe fills in at right-back and whether Chiefs’ defence, with Moloisane in it, can hold firm.
