SA Hockey president Deon Morgan joins FIH Executive Board
South African Hockey president Deon Morgan has won a seat on the International Hockey Federation's Executive Board, giving the country a voice in global decision-making.
South Africa now has a representative on the governing body of world hockey. According to IOL, SA Hockey president Deon Morgan won a vote for a place on the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Executive Board. The vote took place during the federation’s 50th statutory congress, held in Doha, Qatar.
IOL reports that the result gives South Africa a say in how the sport is run at international level.
Forum ahead of the congress
Morgan was among the participants in the Fit for the Future Forum, which was staged before the main congress began. FIH president Tayyab Ikram led the congress and brought international delegates together to discuss where the sport is heading.
Discussions centred on empowering athletes, building a closer relationship with supporters, and hockey’s future within the Olympic movement. The panel looked at making the sport easier to access, attracting new fans and improving the experience for players.
Ikram told delegates the federation needed to do more for its players, who he described as its most important stakeholders. “We must give them a stronger voice,” he said, adding that player welfare should sit at the centre of decisions.
The Cassiem brothers and the national team
IOL linked Morgan’s election to the progress of the national men’s side, which features brothers Dayaan and Mustaphaa Cassiem. Both play in the Dutch Tulp Hoofdklasse, one of Europe’s top club competitions.
Dayaan captains South Africa and has more than 100 international caps. IOL noted that the fast, technical style of the brothers fits the FIH’s goal of showing off a quick and intense game to attract younger, digitally engaged audiences.
Priorities for the sport
The congress wrapped up with a focus on hockey’s place in the Olympic family. According to IOL, the main priorities for the sport are:
- Athlete welfare and empowerment
- Modernising the way fans are engaged
- Stronger governance and sustainable operations
What it means for South African hockey
For local players, coaches and supporters, the main change is representation. With Morgan on the Executive Board, South Africa will have input into decisions at a time IOL describes as critical for hockey’s Olympic future. The report does not detail what specific steps will follow from his election.
