Hunt says Stellenbosch and Durban City have an even chance

Stellenbosch coach Gavin Hunt believes his side and Durban City are evenly matched in tonight's Carling Knockout Cup last 16 tie at Chatsworth Stadium.

Stellenbosch coach Gavin Hunt does not see a clear favourite in tonight’s Carling Knockout Cup Last 16 meeting with Durban City. According to iDiski Times, he believes the two teams go into the match on level terms.

The tie is played at Chatsworth Stadium, and the winner takes the final place in the quarter-finals.

Hunt on his former side

Hunt spoke to local media on Monday. iDiski Times asked him about facing Durban City, whom the 62-year-old coached at the beginning of last season. He said he put plenty of effort into building that squad and that it has a strong core of players.

He described Durban City as “a good nucleus of players” and spoke of their power and strength. He also pointed to their solid home record at Chatsworth. “It’s not easy to go there, that’s for sure,” Hunt said.

Even so, he was positive about his own team’s prospects. He said that if Stellenbosch play well, they have “an even chance”, just as Durban City do.

A settled team is the aim

Hunt also touched on selection. He said Stellenbosch need a more settled line-up, but stressed that he is not changing the team every week. He explained that his choices are shaped by which players are available.

Once the side stabilises, he said, he trusts the squad he has at Stellenbosch. As for how far the team might go in the competition, he said: “you never know.”

Who is already through

Seven clubs have already booked their places in the last eight:

  • Golden Arrows
  • Siwelele
  • AmaZulu
  • Sekhukhune United
  • Orlando Pirates
  • Mamelodi Sundowns
  • Kaizer Chiefs

Either Stellenbosch or Durban City will become the eighth team in that group.

What happens next

Supporters who want to know the next opponents will not have long to wait. The quarter-final draw is set to be held at Chatsworth Stadium once tonight’s match is over. That means the full set of pairings should be known after the final whistle, with the winner of this tie among the names in the draw.
