Bezuidenhout Valley water declared safe after alert lifted

Johannesburg Water has withdrawn its precautionary water quality alert in Bezuidenhout Valley after two rounds of testing found the tap water compliant.

Households in Bezuidenhout Valley can use their tap water again, after Johannesburg Water withdrew a precautionary quality alert for the area, The Citizen reported.

The utility said customers in the affected properties may go back to everyday use of their water, including drinking and cooking. Its technical team is still working on restoring supply to those properties.

“Joburg Water technical team will arrange to open water as soon as practically possible,” the utility said.

What the tests found

Johannesburg Water said samples were taken on 23 October and again on 25 October. They came from properties on 8th Avenue and from the corners of 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Streets.

The water was checked for both microbiological and chemical parameters. According to the utility, the second round was done as an extra precaution to confirm the quality of the water.

Both sets of results met the required standards. “Both sets of results are compliant,” the utility confirmed.

What this means for residents

Before using the water, residents are asked to flush the pipes inside their homes. Johannesburg Water advised opening the taps for a short while so that any water that sat in the lines during the alert is cleared out.

  • The alert has been lifted for the affected properties.
  • Drinking and cooking with tap water is allowed again.
  • Flush your internal pipes by running the taps briefly first.
  • Supply is still being restored to some properties, so water may not return everywhere immediately.

The utility apologised for the inconvenience and thanked residents for their cooperation while the sampling and testing were carried out.
