Mokobodi Delighted With First Soweto Derby Win for Pirates

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi says his first Soweto Derby win, a 2-1 result over Kaizer Chiefs, was a blessing and a test of character.

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi has spoken about the pride of winning his first Soweto Derby, after the Buccaneers beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1, according to iDiski Times.

The 23-year-old was named Man of the Match. Speaking to OP TV after the game, he said he was grateful to have represented the club in such a fixture and described the experience as a blessing.

A response after Chiefs levelled

Mokobodi stressed that the occasion was bigger than an ordinary league match. "It’s not just a game,” he said, pointing to the rivalry between the two Soweto sides.

He was open about the way the contest unfolded. Pirates, he explained, wanted an early goal and got one, but he admitted the first half was not up to standard. When Chiefs equalised, the players knew they had to react. They did, and went on to take the maximum points.

He said the team’s aim throughout was to "represent the badge very well", and that winning was necessary given what the fixture means.

Settling in at Pirates

Mokobodi joined Pirates from Stellenbosch FC in July this year, after about a season and a half at the Western Cape club. He previously played for Marumo Gallants.

Despite being a fairly new arrival, he has become a regular starter under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. In the 2026/27 campaign he has scored two goals and provided four assists for Pirates across all competitions.

His derby performance adds to that record, and the Man of the Match award suggests he has made a strong impression on the biggest stage in South African club football so far.

Pirates now have a derby victory to build on, while Mokobodi will look to keep his place in Ouaddou’s starting line-up as the season continues.
