Dawn Thandeka King to lead Mzansi Magic drama Inyosi

Mzansi Magic has announced a new 13-part drama, Inyosi, with award-winning actress Dawn Thandeka King in the lead role, IOL reported. King’s earlier work includes Shaka iLembe and Diep City.

The series premieres on Monday, 2 November, at 8pm on DStv channel 161.

The story and the cast

King plays Mabongi Mageza-Ngcobo, a widow who has built a successful career in business. She runs Ekhaya Events and Catering as its chief executive. The cast also includes Thembsie Matu and Kwenzo Ngcobo. Newcomer Kethukuthula Jele makes her television debut.

Mabongi has three children, who are played by Kwanele Mkhize (Nsika), Toka Mtabane (Kwanele) and Nandipa Khubone (Samukelo). Once the question of who will lead the company in future becomes real, the three start competing to show they deserve the role. According to IOL, this sets up tension around ambition, power and what their mother leaves behind.

A secret from thirty years ago

The drama also looks back three decades. A young Mabongi went with her family to tell Bheki, the man she loved, that she was expecting his child. He did not accept the child. He said instead that he planned to marry another woman, whom he regarded as pure.

The rejection hit hard because Mabongi had taken part in Umhlanga, a traditional rite of passage in which young women learn cultural values through song, dance and mentorship. IOL reported that the women she had attended the ceremony with then turned their backs on her.

Hoping to win Bheki back, she went to Sunday Nkabinde, a spiritual healer played by Zakhele Msibi, who viewers know from Isibaya. She first asked for umuthi wenhlanhla. Sunday instead gave her an isthwalo, which promised to change her fortunes. She accepted, without realising the choice would reach beyond her own lifetime.

The mystery begins to unravel through Buhle, Jele’s character. She tries to find out where a honeycomb-shaped mark on her back comes from, and it is tied to the old secret finally coming to light.
