Brown Mogotsi back in Johannesburg court over Vosloorus shooting case

Self-described political fixer Brown Mogotsi returns to court today as his lawyers push the State for more information ahead of his trial.

Brown Mogotsi, who calls himself a political fixer, is due back in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 23 October 2026, IOL reported. His lawyers are getting ready to take issue with the way the State answered their request for further particulars.

What he is charged with

The case centres on a shooting in Vosloorus in November 2025. Mogotsi reportedly told police at the time that he had been attacked. The State, however, says the incident was staged and that he fired at his own vehicle.

He faces several charges: illegally having a firearm and ammunition, firing a gun in a built-up area, perjury, and defeating the ends of justice.

The defence request

When the matter was last in court, on 7 October, it was postponed to 23 October. This gave the defence time to bring an application to force the State to hand over information it says it needs to prepare for trial.

According to IOL, the defence is asking for:

  • phone, work and home address records connected to State witnesses;
  • witness statements without any redactions; and
  • still images taken from footage of the alleged shooting.

Custody and bail

Mogotsi was arrested on 15 May, soon after he appeared before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. He has remained in custody since then. IOL reported that he has been refused bail four times, and that earlier bail bids and a challenge in the Gauteng High Court did not succeed.

The commission is looking into claims that crime and political influence have affected the justice system. Witnesses there have made claims about Mogotsi’s alleged connections to people in political and law-enforcement circles. IOL noted that his criminal case is separate from those allegations.

What this means for readers

Today’s appearance deals with a procedural step, not the merits of the case. The court will decide how the dispute over further information is handled, which will shape how quickly the matter can move towards trial. The charges are allegations that the State has yet to prove, and Mogotsi has not been convicted of anything in this case.
