Xoki: Pirates focused on African Stars before Soweto Derby

Orlando Pirates defender Thapelo Xoki says the club will not look past African Stars, despite three matches in eight days that end with the Soweto Derby.

Orlando Pirates face a packed week, but defender Thapelo Xoki says the squad is refusing to look beyond the match in front of them. According to IOL, the Buccaneers play three games in eight days, finishing with the Soweto Derby.

African Stars first

Pirates host African Stars on Friday in the second leg of their CAF Champions League tie. They carry a 1-0 lead from the first meeting, and a result at home would send them into the group stages of the continental competition.

Xoki said the team had taken lessons from last season, when Pirates were left disappointed in Africa. He described the match as “a big game for the club” and said the players are putting their energy into it alone. He acknowledged that a narrow lead does not settle anything. Playing at home gives the side a chance to complete the job in front of their own supporters, but he stressed they must bring the right intensity.

The technical staff will have a key part to play in steering the players through the congested schedule, according to the defender. The squad will deal with the later fixtures when they arrive, he said, and for now the only concern is African Stars.

Cup tie and derby to follow

Once the continental tie is done, there is little time to rest. Pirates meet Milford in the Carling Knockout Cup on Tuesday. The following Saturday brings the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs, one of the biggest fixtures on the domestic calendar.

Managing energy and concentration across the three matches will be important for the coaching staff. Xoki’s message, though, was simple. Pirates know what is coming, but their attention is fixed on advancing in Africa’s premier club competition.

What to watch for supporters

  • Friday: Pirates v African Stars, CAF Champions League, with Pirates leading 1-0 on aggregate after the first leg.
  • Tuesday: Pirates v Milford in the Carling Knockout Cup.
  • Next Saturday: the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

Supporters planning to attend should check kick-off times and ticket details through official club and competition channels, as the source did not provide them.
