POST: Helicopter Pilot (Captain)

LOCATION: Visible Policing and Operations: Air Wing, Gqeberha (PE) Air Wing, Eastern
Cape
LEVEL OF REMUNERATION: Band C R480 144 per annum (excluding allowances)

  • Applicants must display competency in the post-specific core function of the post;
  • Be fluent in at least two of the official languages, of which one must be English;
  • Be in possession of a Senior Certificate (Grade12) or National Certificate (Vocational)
    recorded on the National Learner Record Database on NQF level 4 and an appropriate
    three year Diploma / Degree (SAQA accredited-NQF level 6 or higher;
  • Be in possession of a valid motor vehicle driver’s license;
  • Be a South African Citizen;
  • Must have no previous criminal / departmental convictions or criminal / departmental cases
    pending;
  • Must not have any tattoo marks which will be visible when wearing any uniform of the
    Service;
  • Applicants will be subjected to a vetting process which will include security screening and
    fingerprint verification;
  • Applicants must be willing to travel extensively;
  • Relevant courses in the field of the post may be an advantage;
  • Successful candidates must be willing to attend the prescribed lateral training for Police
    Act personnel;
  • Applicants must have interpersonal communication (verbal and written);
  • Be able to work under pressure as well as extended hours.
    Statutory Requirements:
  • South African (SA) Commercial Pilot’s Licence (must be valid on the closing date as stated
    on the advertisement).
    Organisational Requirements
  • Be prepared to sign a Performance Plan.
  • All required licences must be valid on the closing date of the advertisement.
    Additional Requirements:
  • The applicant must be a holder of a valid Helicopter Commercial Pilot License with Night
    Rating;
  • At least 800 flying hours on helicopters (certified copies of the last three pages of the pilot
    logbook must be attached);
  • Of the minimum 800, not less than 600 as PIC (Pilot in Command); Turbine and Instrument
    rating will be an added advantage;
  • All licenses and relevant ratings must be valid by the closing date of the advertisement.
    Core Functions:
  • Conduct aerial policing duties.
  • Maintain aviation safety standards and policies.
  • Conduct standby duties as pilot.
  • Keep and manage certain administrative functions in terms of set regulations.

Allowances:
The allowances (Flying Allowances – SAPSFA) is based on the years of experience of
pilot, calculated from either date of qualification as a commercial pilot or achieving Wings
in the SAAF flight crew Endorsement as follows:

SAPSFA level 1: R139 560 (pa) payable to a pilot with less than two years of experience;
SAPSFA level 2: R169 680 (p/a) payable to a pilot with two years of
experience;
SAPSFA level 3: R205 656 (p/a) payable to a pilot with five years of
experience;
SAPSFA level 4: R252 588 (p/a) payable to a pilot with eight years of
experience;
SAPSFA level 5: R307 056 (p/a) payable to a pilot with fourteen years of experience and
SAPSFA level 6: R352 452 (p/a) payable to a pilot with more than nineteen years of
experience.
